OLYMPIA – The Association of Washington Cities (AWC) announced that Seattle Councilmember Sally Bagshaw was recently elected large city representative of the Board of Directors. The large city representative serves on the board’s executive committee.

“I am pleased to serve on the AWC Board as the Large City Representative,” Councilmember Bagshaw said. “AWC offers elected officials across our state the opportunity to get to know each other and share solutions to problems we are collectively facing. I was interested to learn this past year that every large city’s first priorities are to decrease homelessness, increase affordable housing and direct funds for more mental health services. With a united front we can approach the legislature and federal government, urging their buy-in to make all of our cities stronger. “

Bagshaw has served on the AWC Board of Directors since 2016. The city of Seattle, as Washington’s largest city, holds two positions, as a single-city district position on the AWC board.

The AWC Board of Directors is the association’s governing body. The board is comprised of 25 directors, 23 of whom are mayors or city councilmembers from Washington cities or towns, and two non-elected city officials who also serve as the president and past president of the Washington City/County Management Association.

AWC serves its members through advocacy, education and services. Founded in 1933, AWC is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation that represents Washington's cities and towns before the state legislature, the state executive branch, and with regulatory agencies. Membership is voluntary. However, AWC consistently maintains 100 percent participation from Washington’s 281 cities and towns. AWC also provides training, data and publications, and programs such as the AWC Employee Benefit Trust, AWC Risk Management Service Agency, AWC Workers’ Comp Retro, AWC Drug and Alcohol Consortium, and AWC GIS Consortium.
