2018 legislation (ESSB 6095) directed the Department of Commerce to award grants to community hospitals and other community entities to expand and establish new capacity for behavioral health services around the state. The first round of grants were awarded to 18 health care providers across the state, helping to create 341 additional beds.
The Behavioral Health Facilities grant program is open to nonprofits, public entities, tribes, and for-profit businesses. Applicants must be registered and licensed to provide behavioral health services in Washington.
Round two has more than $9 million for competitive grants available in the following categories:
- $2,514,697 for secure detox beds;
- $661,341 for acute detox beds;
- $4,218,392 for crisis diversion or stabilization facilities;
- $2,350,000 for community hospitals for free standing evaluation and treatment facilities for 90- or 180-day civil commitments.
The grants are for capital construction projects only. Grant funds may be used for design, engineering, construction, and equipment costs associated with establishing these types of facilities.
