The Washington Climate Action Peer Network is a forum for local government staff that work on climate-related issues to share best practices and learn new approaches. Coordinated by the Municipal Research and Services Center, Association of Washington Cities, and Washington State Association of Counties, meetings are held quarterly, online, for free. Each meeting includes presentations by local governments, state agencies, and other climate experts. The topic of the next meeting, on October 24, is the state’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard. City council meetings in Sunnyside look—and more importantly, sound—a little different these days. Since May, the city has been offering Spanish interpretation services at public meetings. Given the demographics of this central Washington agricultural hub, where Spanish is the primary language spoken in more than 60% of homes, this service aims to make local government more inclusive and welcoming for the city’s Spanish-speaking community.
