Social equity cannabis licenses move forward with clarifications for cities

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

A cannabis bill with far-reaching impacts to city citing authority has been scaled back from its previous version.

A few weeks ago, we asked for your feedback on HB 2022 which would expand social equity cannabis licenses in Washington. We appreciate everyone who took the time to share their thoughts on the proposed legislation.

In good news, the bill picked up an amendment in committee that restores a jurisdiction's ability to establish distancing requirements for cannabis operations. As the bill was originally written, it would have eliminated distance restrictions established by cities other than those for schools.

However, the amended bill also maintains that social equity licenses may be used within any city, county, or town in the state that permits the cannabis business activity at the proposed location.

Dates to remember

HB 2022 is scheduled for a public hearing in the House Appropriations Committee on February 5 at 9 am.
