As with all things COVID, the testing landscape is changing rapidly. Find out what’s staying the same, and what is changing. Learn more about when COVID tests are covered, where you can get free COVID tests, and how COVID treatment is covered.
What is staying the same
COVID tests (at home or through a laboratory) are covered only for diagnostic purposes. This means that the person is either experiencing COVID symptoms or has been identified as a close contact for someone diagnosed
with COVID. Tests for everything else (return/continue to work, travel, family gatherings, going to an event, etc.) are NOT covered.
What is changing
As of January 15, 2022, over-the-counter (OTC) at home tests for diagnostic purposes are covered through insurance. Plans will cover up to eight tests per month for each covered individual over
the age of two. Members may be asked to attest that the tests are for diagnostic purposes. Tests purchased directly through a participating pharmacy will be billed to insurance without cost to the member. Tests purchased elsewhere, including tests purchased
online, can be submitted for reimbursement. (Regence/Asuris members will be reimbursed $12 per test when purchasing outside of their local in-network pharmacy.)
Free COVID-19 tests available
Both the state of Washington (five tests per household) and the federal government (four tests per household) are providing OTC tests shipped directly to people’s homes at no cost. For Washington, the initial response to the program depleted the tests
on hand, but they expect more soon. Check the Department of Health website for more information and updates. The free tests from the federal government can be ordered online.
COVID-19 medical treatment
As a reminder, effective February 1, treatment for COVID is paid at the normal health plan benefits. Regence/Asuris/Kaiser members were sent a letter advising them of this change.
