Access to affordable, high-speed internet is an increasingly important issue facing local government. AWC has become further engaged on the issue with the state’s new Broadband Office and has stood up an internal AWC Broadband Committee to discuss city’s role in the provision of this essential service. See below for ways you can get more involved with broadband policy.
Broadband survey
The Washington State Broadband Office and the Public Works Board have launched a mapping initiative to identify gaps in high-speed internet service and areas of broadband infrastructure needs. They are asking Washington residents to perform a one-minute access and speed survey. The survey can be completed at home using any computer or mobile device. You can take the survey yourself and send it out to your city’s residents.
Broadband grants and loans
The Public Works Board has opened a grant/loan cycle for cities and others for use on broadband investments. The Board currently has $18 million for low-interest loans and grants for broadband construction projects. More information and the application can be found on the Board’s website.
AWC Broadband Committee
AWC recently created an internal committee to focus on broadband issues. The group includes AWC staff, city staff, and elected officials. The committee will use the forum to share information and provide feedback on state policy discussions. If you are interested in participating, please contact Logan Bahr or Maggie Douglas.
