Association of Washington Cities (AWC) is recruiting for two Research Specialist(s). People interested in working full-time or part-time (20 hours per week) are encouraged to apply. For current or recently graduated college/university students, AWC offers this employment opportunity as an internship to gain professional experience and further education and training. AWC will provide interns with appropriate supervision, evaluation, and feedback, and support specific learning objectives.

The Research Specialist will help with the completion of the AWC Tax and User Fee Survey and the Salary and Benefit Survey. The top candidate will be needed from April to July 2020. AWC is looking for a candidate with an interest in data, excellent customer service skills, and who will be highly motivated and detail oriented.

The AWC Tax and User Fee Survey and the Salary and Benefit Survey are voluntary surveys conducted of cities and results are provided as a service for AWC members. These surveys assist in developing and setting tax rates and fees, and salaries and benefits.

What you'll be doing

  • Research tax, fee, salary, or benefit information for cities and other local governments as necessary; research will include locating information from budget documents, fee/salary schedules, ordinances, and/or council minutes
  • Verify survey results by evaluating responses and identifying outliers; correct data as needed
  • Follow up with survey takers by email or phone to verify responses and/or encourage survey completion by the established deadline
  • Test reporting feature to validate data and provide feedback on reporting format and value
  • Assist with other research activities on topics such as city trends or fiscal conditions, as needed

What you bring to the team

  • Associates degree in economics, statistics, business, administration, or a related field; experience may be substituted year-for-year for academic achievement.
  • One year experience in research, data, accounting, or related field (educational classes in these areas may count towards experience)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Professional and have the ability to learn and use a wide variety of proprietary software
  • Strong methodologic and analytic skills
  • Possess strong communication skills, articulates clearly both with the written and spoken word
  • Must possess good time management skills and have the ability to be self-driven by meeting deadlines and completing assigned tasks in the time assigned by the supervisor
  • Ability to be flexible and open to changing priorities and managing multiple tasks simultaneously within compressed timeframes
  • Must demonstrate ability of critical thinking
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize multiple diverse work tasks
  • Ability to model the organization’s high standards of quality customer service to all internal and external customers
  • Must have extensive knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment
  • Must possess a professional appearance and conduct for an office setting
