We’ve been updating you on the conversation regarding whether the state should step into your shoes to implement local land use decisions. A new front on that conversation will be heard – SB 5424, sponsored by Sen. Guy Palumbo (D–Maltby).

The substitute bill that the committee will hear requires cities and counties to establish a gross minimum density of no less than 150 units per acre in all areas zoned for residential use within one-half mile of a light rail station. The bill states that parcels containing affordable housing are not subject to this requirement. We’re not sure of the rationale behind that exemption.

AWC is opposed to this proposal as an erosion of local control and a blanket solution that does not take into account local needs and realities that may influence city-specific zoning decisions.

The Senate Housing Stability & Affordability Committee will hear SB 5424 on Monday, February 4 at 1:30 pm.
