One week left! BLS partner cities need to adopt business license ordinance and notify BLS
State law requires all cities to adopt changes to their business license ordinance (to include a minimum business activity threshold for non-resident businesses and a uniform definition of engaging in business) by January 2019. Cities that are partnered with the state's Business Licensing Service (BLS) have an earlier deadline of October 17, 2018. Once your city adopts it, BLS cities should submit a Change Request form to the Department of Revenue by the October 17 deadline. All other cities should email AWC to let us know when you adopt the new ordinance for our report to the Legislature. Read our white paper for more information and FAQ.

Get ready for The Great ShakeOut!
Muni-Ex Kenmore
Cities throughout Washington are participating in the Great Washington ShakeOut drill on October 18 at 10:18 am. The ShakeOut is our opportunity to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes. If an earthquake happens, do you know what to do? If you said "stand in a doorway" or "run," you got it wrong! Research shows the safest option during an earthquake is to drop, cover, and hold on. Find out why.

USDA proposal to remove their Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) quarantine
Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive exotic insect that can kill any ash tree, including our native ash tree, the Oregon Ash, found in cities throughout Washington. EAB has decimated trees in cities and towns throughout the United States. While it is not yet in Washington, it has been discovered as far west as Colorado. The USDA is proposing to remove domestic quarantine regulations for the insect. If you’d like to weigh in on the proposal, the public comment period runs through November 19.

Tell your legislators what you want from them. Developing a legislative agenda is a simple and effective way to get your legislators’ attention.

  • Keep it short and simple – one page only
  • Add credibility by having your city council adopt it before session
  • Include capital needs along with policy priorities
  • Incorporate AWC’s Legislative Priorities into your agenda
  • Make it public. Post it on your city’s website, put it in your newsletters, and insert it into utility bills
  • Work with your local media for coverage

Once your city legislative agenda is created, share it with us!
