Do you own a community forest? The Legislature wants to hear from you!

The Washington State Legislature directed the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to develop a list of community forest projects. Both potential and existing projects are eligible. What is a community forest? Broadly, it’s a working forest owned and managed by or on behalf of a local community. Visit DNR’s webpage to learn more and submit your forest project. Submissions are due September 28. More

I-940 will go to the ballot
The Washington Supreme Court recently affirmed the trial court, requiring the Secretary of State to place Initiative 940 (I-940) on the November ballot. The initiative changes the legal standard for when an officer faces criminal liability for the use of deadly force. In April, the trial court ruled that the Legislature violated the State Constitution when they passed an amendment to I-940 before voting to approve the initiative itself. The ShakeOut is our opportunity to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes. If an earthquake happens, do you know what to do? If you said “stand in a doorway” or “run,” you got it wrong! Limited grant opportunity – Quality Indigent Defense assessments
The Washington State Office of Public Defense (OPD) will award special grant funds to three cities to contribute towards the cost of participation in a pilot program, Quality Indigent Defense (QID), which will evaluate the quality of contracted indigent defense services in the cities. Applications are due by October 12. For more information or to apply, look under the Featured News section in the middle of OPD’s website. More

RCO grant opportunities
The Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) is accepting applications for four programs including the Boating Facilities Program, Firearms and Archery Range Recreation, Nonhighway and Off-road Vehicle Activities, and the Recreational Trails Program. Pre-applications are due on October 1 and final applications are due November 1. More
