Guidelines for elected and appointed officials’ participation in elections
It’s filing week for legislative elections. Both elected officials and city staff need to understand Public Disclosure Commission (PDC) guidelines and restrictions before participating in any elections activities, such as taking a position on a ballot measure or endorsing a candidate for political office. Check out these resources and common examples of activities city officials may and may not do. More

Personal endorsements of legislative candidates
Local elected officials may choose to support candidates in their private capacity, as is allowed by law. City officials may use their title for identification purposes, but should not use public facilities or equipment for communications, and should make clear that it is their personal view.

If you choose to endorse a candidate, consider asking them how they plan to help maintain a strong city-state partnership. Look for the results of AWC’s candidate questionnaire mid-June, where legislative candidates indicate their positions on important city issues.
