You can help a young person in your community get a scholarship
The AWC Center for Quality Communities will award six outstanding high school seniors a $1,200 scholarship to pursue a post-secondary degree in fall 2018. Each city can nominate one student for consideration. Completed applications must be submitted by the city and forwarded to the AWC Center for Quality Communities by March 9. More

 Resources for all cities
The Small City Resource Manual was developed to make life a little easier around city hall, especially for cities of fewer than 5,000 people. Each chapter tackles a different topic and includes relevant resources you may also find helpful.
Dive in and explore the resources section of the Small City Resource Manual. The Index of Resources is an overview of publications, legal references, and training opportunities you should know about. Appendix A lists key state and federal agency resources; and Appendix B is a compilation of population, county, class and government types for all cities and towns.
We’ll feature other chapters in the coming months or you can review the manual in its entirety here.

DHS FEMA assistance to firefighters fire prevention & safety grant program
Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Assistance (DHS FEMA) announced a $1.5 million grant program to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters. Grant funds are aimed at mitigating fire and fire-related hazards by assisting fire prevention programs and supporting firefighter health and safety research and development. Application deadline is March 16. More

Washington Service Corps members address unmet needs in your community. They serve 10.5 month terms of service in schools, government and in public or private nonprofit organizations. Examples of their service include academic tutoring, housing and job placement services, nutrition and health education, disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and veteran volunteerism.
