<a target="_blank" href="https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=1598&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2019"><strong>HB 1598</strong></a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5522&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2019"><strong>SB 5522</strong></a> each passed their respective chambers and provide an opportunity for code cities to get a new tool to facilitate annexations.

HB 1598 and SB 5522 each passed their respective chambers and provide an opportunity for code cities to get a new tool to facilitate annexations.

Codes cities would be able to annex under an interlocal agreement if they can reach agreement with their counties and interested fire districts, water sewer districts, and transportation benefit districts. This bill also prescribes new public process requirements. The benefit of this new method is that it is not subject to referendum, so it may provide more certainty for some cities.

If your city is supportive of this new option, please communicate that with your House members.

Dates to remember

SB 5522 is scheduled for public hearing on Wednesday, February 26 at 8 am in the House Local Government Committee, and for a committee vote on Friday at 8 am.
